Abstract
Description
Abstract : Reflective writing has been introduced in many educational institutions as a means of tracking students’ academic progress. Studies have shown that, students who write reflectively have been seen to achieve higher order thinking. They are able to understand their lessons better as they internalize what they have learnt. Writing reflectively is now being emphasised at Pre-University level in Malaysia. This paper seeks to discuss how writing reflectively among Pre-University students enabled them to process their thoughts and construct their own understanding of chemistry. Pre-University students from a Pre-Engineering class participated in this action research. The Reflection Journal was set up in the Institution’s Learning Management System which is the Blackboard Release 6. The students write reflectively in the Reflection Journal for two separate weeks. The findings are as follow: (1) students were found to be involved in self-regulated learning (2) students were able to think critically through their writing and (3) students could save their Reflection Journal as a form of evidence for future reference. It can be concluded that reflective writing produces students with a better understanding of chemistry.
