dc.description | Abstract : The main aim of this paper is to study the knowledge eliciting method adopted in dealing with large database of information that is vital in decision making and effective management of the ecotourism destinations in Malaysia. The researcher analysed two case studies to understand the knowledge eliciting method used in the ecotourism industry in Malaysia. In the first case, Universiti Putra Malaysia’s Expert Rating System that was developed to monitor and rate the ecotourism destinations in Peninsular Malaysia will be analysed. The second case study would look into Wild Asia’s Responsible Tourism checklist criteria active spreadsheet. In both the system, explicit knowledge and tacit knowledge is utilized to evaluate the eco-destination objectively. The analyses showed that the knowledge-based system can benefit the ecotourism industry by assisting operators to plan, guide and develop eco-sites in a monitored and controlled manner for effective and efficient management. The large number of eco-sites in Malaysia is able to be effectively checked and managed, with good enforcement and scrutiny with the application of this knowledge management technology. This study can be used as the basis to analyse other similar knowledge elicitation methods used to manage large database for effective decision making. This study would open the doors for more initiatives to follow suit and use technology to manage Mother Nature for the benefit of the future generations. | |
