Abstract
Description
Abstract: Blackboard Learning SystemTM Release 6, a learning management system was introduced in Taylor’s University College in 2003. Up to 2006, there was no empirical study on the extent of Blackboard usage by the Cambridge ‘A’ Level lecturers. The effectiveness of the strategies for Blackboard implementation also remained unknown. Therefore a quantitative survey was done to examine (1) the state of the art of Blackboard usage by the Cambridge ‘A’ Level programme lecturers and (2) the impact of the management strategies on the lecturers’ decisions to incorporate Blackboard into their teaching. Results showed that the distribution of the lecturers in terms of their levels of adoption of Blackboard was skewed to the left. The popularity of 16 Blackboard modules and the lecturers’ purposes for using Blackboard were discovered. The lecturers’ levels of adoption of Blackboard were found to be related to gender, years of experience in the programme, subject area and ICT literacy. Strategies of the CAL programme management, competence development and infrastructure development that impacted the lecturers’ decision to use Blackboard were identified. Recommendations on the strategies to increase the lecturers’ levels of Blackboard usage were suggested.
