Abstract
Description
Abstract: This paper intends to explore the components and indicators of coastal development and management and study the status of development and management of the coastal zone of Cox’s Bazaar, Bangladesh. In order to facilitate the study, a tool in the form of checklist was developed to assess the performance of the identified coastal zone. The checklist comprised of six main components, natural resources and environment
build environment
tourism operating service sectors
institutional elements
integrated coastal zone management
and sustainable tourism development. These components were split into various indicators or control factors based on the literature. This study used the strength value of the checklist to determine the success of tourism development and management system of the Cox’s Bazaar. A preliminary evaluation carried out at Cox’s Bazaar revealed that the destination’s tourism development and management status is ‘average’, which indicates the need for improvement. The findings of the study would be of help to the tourism developers and operators of tiny to large tourism projects, local coastal communities and government units to understand the status of development and management and act upon.
