Abstract
Description
Abstract: Student-Centered Learning or SCL was brought into the education scenario in the mid-1990s. Focus in learning is shifted from the teacher to the student. Students in SCL classroom take responsibility of their own knowledge building. This enables them to better understand a theoretical concept which is done through various SCL activities carefully chosen or created by SCL Facilitators. These facilitators are the teachers’ new role in SCL classroom. Facilitators do not teach nor lecture but they give guidance and educational scaffoldings to students. Although most universities and colleges are moving towards implementing SCL into their curriculum and Instructional Design, there are still resistance coming from teachers and students. This paper seeks to review these resistances from both quarters and provide some suggestions to them through exploratory research. The conclusions from this paper are : (1) all kinds of resistance should be resolved before SCL could be fully implemented,(2) students, teachers and parents should be briefed on what is SCL and its benefits, (3) administrators and superiors/assessors should be well trained in SCL to give fair evaluation.
